Tom. Teller of tales, tour guide extraordinaire, tank collector.
We had the privilege of having Tom as a guide on our trip along the coast of Northern Ireland. I knew I liked him right away when he announced he would share Northern Ireland’s history and culture through Irish myth and legend. He proceeded to entertain us with stories of Lilliputians, floating islands, haunted cliffs, collapsing castles and vengeful fairies as we drove along part of the Causeway Coastal Route. Tom made our trip memorable.
As we drove back to Belfast, we chatted a bit and he shared that his hobby happened to be collecting tanks. I bothered him to tell me more.
Tom was a soldier in Northern Ireland and Germany and a member of the Ulster Military Vehicle Club. He bought a wreck of a Long Range Deep Penetration Land Rover, restored it and sold it to buy “the Little British Tank.” Tom, ever the practical man, uses the tank on the occasional drive around town and the necessary trip to Tescos. As you do.
Stay tuned for some of Tom’s stories in my upcoming posts about Northern Ireland. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much I as I did.
