Let’s Run Away to….Scotland
A Scotland Getaway..
Extended family…eating, as usual
I guess it’s official…summer is over. We’ve celebrated the last warm-weather bank holiday in the UK and friends in the US are wrapping up the dog days with a long, Labor Day weekend. Fall, or Autumn or whatever I’m supposed to call it has always been a bittersweet time of transition in our house.
Back when I had my teaching life, August meant gearing up for a new school year and spending as much time as possible together before transitioning back to teacher mode and sending everyone off to school/university/wherever. My new non-teacher life in the UK has me packing up the youngest this week for her trip to University of St Andrews. My oldest daughter is back in Haiti, working with Project Medishare and the Office of the Prime Minister of Haiti. My middle daughter is back from India and trying to figure out the ins and outs of the UK visa system so she can stay in the UK and work on her new startup.
We went from being together 24/7 and having a houseful of chaos to a houseful of quiet. Boooooo.

To soothe my wandering soul and melancholy heart, I decided to make the “drop-the-student-off-at-uni ” trip into a travel week. I talked The Mister into coming with me, so we’ll do some “me” things and some “man” things.
The first stop will be the ever beautiful St Andrews, followed by something rural and wild and…remote. I haven’t finished planning yet, but I’m thinking about wild, open spaces, the ocean and mountains, a few pub meals by a roaring fire, a little history and a bit of adventure.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a wee coo or two either.
I’ve planned an exciting and terrifying surprise for The Mister (don’t tell!), a stop in Loch Lomond and a trip to the “remotest pub in Britain” before wandering up through the Highlands and Isle of Skye. It will all come together this week (I hope), but I wondered if any of you had ideas? Do you know of any wonderful places to eat, drink and/or be merry? A favorite place to stay or thing to see? Any good reads? I’m all ears.
A wee coo
I’m ready for an escape! Do you have a favorite place to go when you feel the need to escape? Tell me about it in the comments below…
